Janine van Wyk (born April 17, 1987 in Alberton ) is a South African soccer player . The defender has played for the South African national team since 2005 and has been the record player since 2015. She is also a record-breaking African national player.

Career

In 2013 van Wyk founded her own team with JVW FC and acted there as a player-coach until the end of 2016. In 2016 she reached the runner-up with JVW FC behind the women's football department of Bloemfontein Celtic . For the 2017 season of the NWSL van Wyk switched to the Houston Dash franchise .

In August 2019 she got a contract with the Danish runner-up Fortuna Hjørring .

National team

She made her first international match on December 3, 2005 against Nigeria . In October 2011, she was able to qualify for the first time with South Africa for the Olympic Games in London 2012 . At the Olympic Games she was used in the three group games. Although the South Africans lost the first two games against Sweden (1: 4) and Canada (0: 3), they achieved a respectable success with a goalless draw against world champions Japan .

On November 7, 2012, she then scored the only goal of the game against Nigeria, through which South Africa could win against Nigeria for the first time and reached the final of the 2012 African Football Championship for women . Here, however, they lost 4-0 as in 2008 against hosts Equatorial Guinea . On August 10, 2014, she made her 100th international match in the friendly against Namibia . At the African Cup of Nations in 2014 , however, they missed the 2015 World Cup due to their first defeat against Ivory Coast in the game for third place . Van Wyk became the record-breaking South African and African national team player on March 28, 2015 when she beat Portia Modise's record in Limbe in her 125th international match against Cameroon . In October 2015, the South Africans were able to qualify for the Olympic Games again when they won a game against Equatorial Guinea for the first time in six years in the final round . On April 12, 2016, she and her team qualified for the 2016 African Championship .

On September 17, 2018, she played her 150th international match in a 6-0 win against Malawi as part of the 2018 COSAFA Women's Championship .

At the 2019 World Cup, she was used in the three games, but retired with her team after the group stage.
