Yahel Castillo, raised as an only child, began diving at the age of 14. In 2006 his career was interrupted by a broken ankle. Although doctors gave him a year to recover, he managed to heal the injury within six months. Then he started three months later, in July 2007, at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he achieved eighth place in the individual competition and fifth place in the synchronous competition with his compatriot Luis Huerta from the 3-meter board . In the same year he took part in Grand Prix and World Series competitions and achieved his best placement in synchronized jumping from the 3-meter board with a third place at the Italian Grand Prix and in the World Series competition in his home country of Mexico City took seventh place in the individual from the 3-meter board. Castillo rose to the top of the world in the following year, when the Mexican won the individual competition from the 3-meter board at the World Series competition in Tijuana in front of his home crowd , as well as further podium places at the China Open (both in individual and synchronized jumping) and won the World Cup in Beijing . At the Summer Olympics in the Chinese capital, Castillo was number two in the world in the individual competition from the 3-meter board. There he was counted among the medal candidates together with the Chinese jumpers He Chong and Qin Kai , the Canadian Alexandre Despatie and the Russian Dmitri Sautin , but only finished seventh when He Chong won.

At the beginning of July 2009 Castillo took part in the Universiade in Belgrade , where he won the silver medal on the 3-meter board behind the Chinese Pan Zhaowei. A few weeks later it became known that the jumper had been under the influence of alcohol at the student world games, which put his sports scholarship of 25,500 pesos (approx. 1,340 euros) per month at risk. Although a sanction for the offense on the part of the Mexican Swimming Federation was still pending, Castillo took part in the World Championships in Rome in mid-July , where he finished sixth on the 3-meter board in the victory of the Chinese He Chong. At the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai , he and Julián Sánchez won bronze in the 3-meter synchronized jumping. It was his first international medal at a major international championship. In the individual from the 3-meter board, he also achieved sixth place. The 2011 Pan American Games in his hometown were very successful for him . He won the gold medal in the individual from the 3-meter board and with Julián Sánchez in the 3-meter synchronized jumping.

Castillo is currently being trained by Jorge Rueda and counts jumps with a degree of difficulty of up to 3.9 in his repertoire.
