Alexander "Alex" Meyer (born July 5, 1988 in Rochester , Minnesota ) is an American open water swimmer . In 2010 he became world champion over 25 kilometers.

At the 2010 Open Water World Championships in Roberval , Canada , he won in 5: 32: 39.38 hours ahead of the Italian Valerio Cleri (5: 32: 40.40 h) and the Bulgarian Petar Stoichev (5: 33: 50.29).

Five years later at the 2015 World Swimming Championships on the Kazanka River in Kazan, Russia, he was only defeated by the Italian Simone Ruffini (4: 53: 10.7) in 4: 53: 15.1 and relegated his compatriot Matteo Furlan (4:54:38, 0) to the bronze rank.

At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 , he finished 10th over 10 km in 1: 50: 48.2 hours (the winner here was the Tunisian Oussama Mellouli (1: 49: 55.1)).

Meyer studied and graduated from Harvard University and is a member of the Harvard Crimson sports team .
