Spyridon "Spyros" Gianniotis ( Greek Σπυρίδων "Σπύρος" Γιαννιώτης , born February 19, 1980 in Liverpool ) is a Greek swimmer. He won the world championship title in 10-kilometer open water swimming at the 2011 World Swimming Championships in Shanghai, as he did two years later in Barcelona .

Born in Liverpool to an English mother, Gianniotis had the first swimming club in his youth, the Kerkyra Nautical Club in Corfu Town . He is now active at Olympiacos Piraeus .

Olympic participation

After qualifying for the 2000 Olympic Games , he reached 20th place in Sydney over 400 meters freestyle and 21st place over 1500 m freestyle. The Greek 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay was 15th with him.

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens he reached the finals in the same individual disciplines and was seventh over 400 meters (3: 48.77) and fifth over 1500 meters (15: 03.69).

In Beijing , at the Olympic Games in 2008 , he was only able to finish 24th and 12th over the same distances. Over 10 kilometers in open water, he was 16th (1: 52: 20.4 hours) in the front of the field.

Spyros Gianniotis had the honor of being the first torchbearer for the London 2012 Olympics.
