Etiene Medeiros (born May 24, 1991 in Recife ) is a Brazilian swimming athlete and Olympian (2016). She was world champion over 50 meters back in 2017 on the long course and in 2014 and 2016 on the short course.

Career

Her greatest success was winning the world title at the 2014 Short Course World Championships in Doha over 50 m back on December 7, 2014 in a world record time of 25.67 s (see also list of swimming world records over 50 m back ) ahead of the Australian Emily Seebohm (25.83 p ) and the Hungarian Katinka Hosszú (25.96 s). At the same event, she also won gold as the starting swimmer with the Brazilian 4 × 50 meter mixed medley relay (1: 37.26 min) and her colleagues Felipe França Silva , Nicholas Santos and Larissa Oliveira in front of the British and the Italians.

A year later, she won four medals at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, including gold over 100 meters back in 59.61 s and silver over 50 meters freestyle in 24.55 s.

At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia, she landed silver in 27.26 seconds between the two Chinese women Fu Yuanhui (27.11 s) and Liu Xiang (27.58 s) over 50 m back .

Gold, along with two other medals, was also won with the 4 × 100 meter relay at the 2014 South American Games in Santiago de Chile and five times at the 2014 South American Swimming Championships in Mar del Plata.

2016 Summer Olympics

Before the 2016 Summer Olympics, Medeiros had positive results for the banned asthma drug fenoterol in both the A and B samples in May 2016 . At the beginning of July 2016, she was acquitted of the allegation of doping by the sports court of the national association CBDA, so that she could start at the Summer Olympic Games in August 2016. At the 2016 Summer Olympics , she took 16th place over 50 m freestyle, 14th place over 100 m freestyle and 25th place over 100 m back.

At the 2017 World Championships in Budapest , she won the gold medal in the 50 m back discipline with a time of 27.14 s ahead of the Chinese Fu Yuanhui and the Belarusian Aljaksandra Herassimenja .
