He won his first title at the Oceania Swimming Championships in Cairns in 2006 , when he won the title over 50 meters, 100 meters, 200 meters back and together with the 4 × 100 meter relay. In the same year he narrowly missed qualifying for the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in the trials as third over 100 meters back and as sixth and eighth over 50 meters and 200 meters back .

2008 was his most successful year to date with winning the bronze medal over 50 meters back at the 2008 Short Course World Championships in Manchester and winning the silver medal together with the Australian 4 × 100 meter relay at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . At the Summer Olympics, he also took a good fifth place over 100 meters back.

A year later he celebrated winning the bronze medal with the 4 × 100 meter relay at the 2009 World Swimming Championships in Rome . In all individual competitions on the back distance it was rather disappointing for Delaney. Over 50 meters and 100 meters back he was eliminated as 16th and 10th in the semifinals and over 200 meters back as 17th in the preliminary run.

In 2010 he was able to convince again with his special courses at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships 2010 in Irvine by winning the silver medal over 50 meters back and the bronze medal over 100 meters back. He also won another bronze medal with the Australian 4 × 100 meter relay. In the same year he swam at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi over 50 m back, 100 m back and 200 m back each in third place; he won the gold medal with the 4 × 100 m layered relay.
