The first European settler settled in what is now Sale in 1844. A post office was set up on the Latrobe River about three years before the city was officially founded . Gold discoveries at Omeo in 1851 and the Victorian gold rush favored the growth of the place. In 1863 Sale already had 1,800 inhabitants. After the discovery of oil and gas off the coast of Victoria in 1965, Sale became the home of many of the exploration workers at Esso Australia and BHP Billiton .
