The Latrobe River , also La Trobe River , is a river in Gippsland in the Australian state of Victoria .

course

It rises in the area between Powelltown and Noojee , where it shares its catchment area with the Little Yarra River , a tributary of the Yarra River . In the further course it takes up some tributaries from the southern slopes of the Baw Baw Plateau , part of the Australian Alps . The Latrobe River flows first in an easterly direction, then south and finally east again through the Latrobe Valley into Lake Wellington , one of the Gippsland lakes . Its tributaries include the Moe River , Tanjil River, and Tyers River .

The lake narracan is a reservoir in the course of the river near Newborough , which for the cooling water supply to the nearby lignite power stations were built.

Origin of name

The river was named by WA Brodribb in 1841 after Charles La Trobe , the first lieutenant governor of the Port Phillip district .
