The Shinmoe-dake ( Japanese. 新 燃 岳 , literally: "new burning peak") is an active volcano on the Japanese island of Kyushu on the border of the prefectures of Kagoshima and Miyazaki .
The volcano is part of the Kirishima Group that surrounds Kagoshima Bay . It is 1420.8 m high.
The Shinmoe-dake was the model for the volcano hideout in the movie James Bond 007 - You Only Live Twice .
Volcanism
The volcano formed together with the ancient Karakuni-dake and the Koshiki-dake about 18,000 years ago from lava flows and pyroclasts .
Eruptions are known from the year 1637, between March 11, 1716 and September 18, 1717 with pyroclastic flows , mud floods and pyroclastic fall deposits , in which 60 people were killed, and 1771 to 1772 (with slag, ash rain, pyroclastic flows and mud floods) .
Modern times
In 1959, 1991 and 2008 phreatic explosions and smaller eruptions triggered by earthquakes occurred.
Activity 2011
On January 19 and again on January 26, eruptions occurred, with the cloud of smoke reaching a height of 1,500 m, and for a short time even 7,500 m, which impaired air traffic.
On March 13, 2011, a smaller eruption followed with clouds of smoke that rose up to 4,000 meters.
Due to the eruptions, the emerald green crater lake, which was located at an altitude of 1239 m, disappeared. Instead, a lava dome with a diameter of 500 m was created there .
2017/2018
In October 2017 there was an eruption with a three hundred meter high ash ejection. The residents were warned that ash could be deposited up to 2 km away.
From March 1, 2018, there was renewed volcanic activity, as a result of which the danger zone was expanded to a radius of 3 km around the crater. On March 6, the eruption of ash and smoke reached a height of more than 3,000 meters. On April 5, 2018, it was reported that rocks were thrown out and ashes rose 5000 m. Japan has around 110 active volcanoes, around 50 of which are continuously monitored, Shinmoe being one of them.
