location
Lake Narracan is located on the Latrobe River in the Latrobe Valley . The dam is about 1.5 km upstream from the Yallourn Power Station . The upper end of the reservoir is about 6 km to the west near the confluence of Narracan Creek and Latrobe River. The lake was also called Yallourn Storage Dam .
history
The reservoir was built between 1959 and 1961 by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria and has a filling volume of 8.6 million m³.
In 2002, extensive renovation work was carried out to bring the reservoir back to the state of the art. The dam wall was anchored better in the load-bearing rock and the four gates were reinforced.
purpose
The reservoir is important for the provision of cooling water for the power plants in the Latrobe Valley. Another reservoir, the Blue Rock Lake , about 15 km upstream on the Tanjil River increases the available volume.

Lake Narracan is also used as a recreation area for water sports, e.g. B. water skiing, jet skiing, swimming, fishing and hiking on the banks. A school camp (Woorabinda) on the north bank is designed for around 75 children. There is a small tent and caravan site on the south bank. The Latorbe Valley Model Aero Club is also on the lakefront.
