Hermann Narten

Hermann Narten (full name Georg Hermann Carl Narten ; and Georg Hermann Narten * May 17, 1839 in Hanover ; † May 30, 1916 ibid) was a German sculptor , architect and museum director.

Life

Hermann Narten was born as the son of master locksmith and brewer Wilhelm Johann Jacob Narten (1803–1845) in Hanover. His brothers were the architects Adolf Narten (1842–1928) and Werner Narten (1832–1899).

Hermann Narten made an apprenticeship as a sculptor with Georg Hurtzig (1812-1856), studied after his death from 1856 to 1861 at the Polytechnic School in Hanover , was from 1861 to 1864 in the studio of Friedrich Wilhelm Dankberg in Berlin and at the art academy there.

From 1864 to 1888 he ran his own studio in Hanover. He worked for Conrad Wilhelm Hase on the Christ Church and in 1865/66 for Edwin Oppler on the interior of the Marienburg .

From 1877 to 1888 he was on the board of directors of the Hanover Art Association and in 1885 co-founder of the Hanover Arts and Crafts Association, where he helped build the collection for the Leibnizhaus . From 1882 to 1888 he was a teacher at the arts and crafts school . In 1887 he worked in Cologne with his college friend, the architect Emil Schreiterer (1852–1923).

From 1888 to 1910 he was in Oldenburg (Oldenburg) director of the arts and crafts museum and the arts and crafts drawing school.

In 1900 Narten became a member of the Bauhütte zum white paper . In 1902 he was given the title of professor . He lived at Gottorpstrasse 28 in Oldenburg. Friedrich Schwarting (1883–1918) was one of his students there . From 1912 he lived in Hanover again.

Hermann Narten was married to Sophie Spehr (1850–1889) from Braunschweig , who died shortly after the birth of her son Enno Narten (1889–1973), who was to become an important figure in the early Wandervogel movement.

Hermann Narten is buried in the Engesohde city cemetery in Hanover.
