Morwell

Morwell is a city in central Gippsland , a region in the east of the state of Victoria in Australia . Morwell is the center of Victoria's lignite mining Latrobe Valley . Morwell is also the capital of the Local Government Area Latrobe City . The name Morwell probably comes from the Aboriginal name More willie (German: woolly possum ).

history

The earliest inhabitants of the Morwell area were the Gunai (sometimes Kurnai ) Aboriginal tribe . Your first contact with European immigrants was probably the pastoralists who in the 1840s from the area of Monaro in New South Wales to seek new pastures were killed for their cattle.

In 1841, McMillan and Strzelecki set out to explore what would later become Gippsland, and in the 1840s the herd of sheep from Maryvale, Merton Rush and Hazelwood expanded into what is now Morwell.

The 1870s were the time of railroad construction in Victoria. In 1873 the government approved the construction of a railway line from Melbourne to Sale and with that decision the development of the city of Morwell began.

The first public land sale in the city took place in January 1879, but by that time there were already at least ten traders there and a post office opened in 1875 (there was a rural post office in the area from 1870 to 1873). On January 1, 1880, the Morwell Post Office was renamed Morwell Bridge and the second local post office, Morwell Railway Station (opened in 1877) became the main post office.

A brick and earthenware factory was established in the 1880s, and a butter factory and bitters factory were built in 1890.

Coal became important to Morwell as early as the 1880s . In 1888, two coal mining companies were formed - the Great Morwell Coal Mining Company and the Maryvale Proprietary Coal Mining Company . Both companies mined pitch coal and contributed to the industrial growth of the city, which also included logging, the production of food and beverages (butter and bitters), brickworks and earthenware production, and the transport of goods on the major railway lines. Fires in the industrial estates in 1890 and 1912 caused great damage to the shops. This led to the formation of the Morwell Waterworks Trust and in December 1913 a water supply for the city, fed by Billy's Creek , was put into operation.

The start of lignite mining in Yallourn and the construction of the associated power station in the 1920s promoted Morwell's development and created jobs and further trade.

Work on the power plant and briquette production in Morwell was started in 1949 by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) with the start of the lignite mining and the ordering of systems for briquette production in Germany . The power station was initially called the Morwell Power Station and is now known as Energy Brix . The production of briquettes for house and industrial fires began in 1956. In addition, town gas production for Melbourne was set up in an adjacent gas works by the Gas and Fuel Corporation of Victoria .

Morwell continued to grow in the 1980s and 1990s. Schools for the children of the immigrants were built.

1983/1984 a research project on the liquefaction of brown coal ( Brown Coal Liquefaction Victoria (BCLV)) was established in Morwell. At the expense of the Japanese government, a pilot plant with a capacity of 50 tons per day was built for more than AU $ 1 billion, which was operated until 1991. Hundreds of Japanese families settled in the area through the project, resulting in a unique school experiment in the form of a combined Japanese-Australian curriculum at Commercial Road Primary School .

The development of the energy industry enabled Morwell to offer many residents affordable housing and income opportunities. With the economic growth in the Latrobe Valley , Morwell's favorable development appeared to continue. However, the privatization of the State Electricity Commission in the 1990s resulted in massive job losses in the region.

The amalgamation of the individual city and local councils in a joint commission led to the administrative center being relocated to Traralgon . With the reintroduction of an elected councilor, the town council moved back to Morwell and the construction of a new building for it in 2005 brought a revitalization of the town center. The new courthouse was completed in 2006 and provided additional functions in the city center.

The headquarters of the Central Gippsland Institute of Technical and Further Education (TAFE, German: Institute for Technical Education and Training) is located in Morwell . It hosts an important regional art exhibition with an excellent collection of works by local artists and is known for its extensive rose gardens. Nearby, in Churchill , is the Gippsland Monash University campus . A bust of Lieutenant General Sir Stanley Savige (1890-1954) was placed there in 2006. Savige was born in Morwell and founded after the First World War , the Legacy Australia , who took care of war widows and families of fallen soldiers.
