Mitja Zastrow (born March 7, 1977 in Mettmann , Germany ) is a former German and Dutch swimmer and today's trainer.

Career

Zastrow began his swimming career at SV Bayer Wuppertal , where he was trained by Torsten Petsch .

In 1999 he took part in the European Short Course Championship in Lisbon and won the silver medal in the 4 x 50 meter freestyle relay with Alexander Lüderitz , Stephan Kunzelmann and Kai Hanschmann in a new German record time of 1: 27.76 minutes.

After a conflict with the German Swimming Association (DSV), Zastrow became a Dutch citizen in July 2003 . He then trained at PSV Eindhoven , where he was looked after by Petsch, who had also moved there. In 2003 he competed for the first time as a Dutch citizen at the World Swimming Championships in Barcelona . But this time a back injury threw him back and prevented him from taking part in most of the competitions for which he had qualified.

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens he won the silver medal in the 4 × 100 m freestyle together with Pieter van den Hoogenband , Johan Kenkhuis and Klaas-Erik Zwering .

At the Short Course World Championships in Manchester in 2008 , he won the silver medal in a European record time with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay.

His swimming career was often slowed down by injuries. In 2001, when he was supposed to drive the 100 m freestyle to the 2001 World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka as German champion , a hand injury prevented his start. In 2008 Zastrow ended his active career and became a swimming coach at SG Essen . In 2017 he was hired as DSV national coach of the juniors.

Zastrow has a Chinese character tattooed on his left shoulder. The symbol is "猴" and means "monkey".
