Caroline Mary Series (born March 24, 1951 in Oxford ) is an English mathematician who deals with hyperbolic geometry , Klein groups and dynamic systems .

Life

Series is the daughter of the physicist George William Series , visited the Oxford High School of Girls and studied from 1969 at Somerville College of Oxford University (Bachelor in 1972, the same time she was awarded the Mathematics Prize of the University) and from 1972 with a Kennedy Scholarship to Harvard University , where she received her PhD from George Mackey in 1976 ( Ergodic action of product groups ). In 1976/77 she was a lecturer at Berkeley University and 1977/78 Research Fellow at Newnham College, Cambridge University . From 1978 she was at the University of Warwick as Lecturer, Reader (from 1987) and Professor (from 1992). From 1999 to 2004 she was EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) Senior Research Fellow there.

Series found illustrations of Rufus Bowen's theory of dynamic systems in the geometry of continued fractions and two-dimensional hyperbolic geometry (effect of Fuchsian groups ) in the 1970s . Then she dealt with similar (partly fractal ) geometric patterns in three-dimensional hyperbolic spaces (with Klein's groups as symmetry groups ). Corresponding computer images led to a book project with David Mumford and David Wright, the creation of which took over ten years. Other of her co-authors are Linda Keen and Joan Birman ( set of Birman-Series ).

In 1987 Series received the Junior Whitehead Prize from the London Mathematical Society . In 1992 she held the Rouse Ball Lecture in Cambridge and in 1986 she was an Invited Speaker at the ICM in Berkeley ( Symbolic dynamics for geodesic flows ). From 1990 to 2001 she edited the Student Texts of the London Mathematical Society. In 1986 she was a founding member of the European Woman Mathematicians (EWM). In 2009 she was Emmy Noether - Visiting Professor at the University of Göttingen . She is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society . In 2014 she received the Senior Anne Bennett Prize from the London Mathematical Society. In 2016 she was elected a member of the Royal Society and in 2017 of the Academia Europaea .
