Dante Deneen Washington (born November 21, 1970 in Baltimore , Maryland , USA ) is a retired American football player on the position of a striker . He currently works for the Ohio News Network (ONN) as a football commentator .
Career
Player career
Washington began his career as a football player at Radford University in 1988 and played there until he left in 1992. Only two years later he joined the Washington Warthogs in 1994, with whom he was under contract until 1996. His first professional appearances in the newly founded Major League Soccer (MSL) came in 1996 with Columbus Crew for which he only played three games before he transferred to Texas to Dallas Burn that same year . In the years 1996 to 2000 Washington ran 85 times for the red-white-blue and scored 24 goals. He also won the US Cup with the team in 1997 .
After a draft in 2000, Washington came back to Columbus Crew for whom he played a total of 72 league games until his move to the Virginia Beach Mariners in 2003 and scored 28 times in the goal. In his time, which he spent from 2003 to 2004 with the now defunct Virginia Beach Mariners in the second-rate A-League , he scored 17 goals in 27 games. In 2004 he came back to Columbus Crew for a single match and then moved to Salt Lake City in 2005 to join the recently founded soccer club Real Salt Lake .
For the club he played in nine games, scored two goals and then ended his active career as a football player. Shortly thereafter he came to a few short stints at the indoor soccer club Baltimore Blast . He scored a total of 52 goals in the top US division, the MLS, and had 30 assists . In 1997 he was inducted into Radford University's Sports Hall of Fame .
International
In total, Washington played six games for the US national team and scored two goals. He scored one in his debut game on March 12, 1991 against Mexico . He was also a member of his country's Olympic team at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona , where he played in the group game against Italy on July 24, 1992. The Italians won the game 2-1 in the end.
Career as a football commentator
After retiring as a soccer player, Washington began working for the Ohio News Network (ONN) as a sports reporter and has since commented on Columbus Crew home games.
