Tim Austin (born April 14, 1971 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) is an American boxer.

amateur

South African Austin tried in vain to qualify for the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988 at the age of 17 in the light flyweight division. He then rose to flyweight and was more successful in this weight class: in 1990 he won the Golden Gloves and the Goodwill Games in Seattle , in 1991 he was both US champion and Golden Gloves winner. In 1991 at the World Cup in Sydney he failed in the second round of the tournament against the Hungarian István Kovács .

In 1992 he qualified for the Olympic Games in Barcelona and won a bronze medal there. He lost in the semifinals to the Cuban Raúl González in the first round of the fight prematurely, which indicated poor taker skills. His record was 113-9.

professional

In 1993 Austin switched to the professional camp and signed with promoter Don King . By 1997, he briefly knocked out a number of opponents. In his first fight against a world class boxer on July 19, 1997, he defeated the South African Mbulelo Bolile with a technical knockout in the eighth round and won the IBF bantamweight belt .

A series of defenses against challengers of dubious quality followed. The US press praised his supposed clout, but the KOs he scored rarely came about in the first rounds. Arthur Johnson, who was knocked out in the first round of the flyweight division, went the distance with Austin.

Finally, the IBF made a world-class opponent a compulsory challenger with the Mexican Rafael Márquez , who was able to snatch the title from him: Márquez beat Austin on February 15, 2003 by a technical knockout in round eight. In April 2006 he went KO against Eric Aiken (14 wins, four losses).

Others

Shortly after his loss to Márquez, Austin was accused of raping a 16-year-old girl but was acquitted. In 2008, he was arrested for domestic violence after threatening to kill his wife and slapping her in the face.
