Christian Donald Laettner (born August 17, 1969 in Angola , New York ) is a former American basketball player of Polish origin. He played in the position of power forward in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
college
Laettner attended Duke University until 1992 . In 1991 and 1992 he led his college team, which also later belonged to the NBA player Grant Hill , to the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship . He earned a reputation for strong nerves when he converted a one-point deficit with two buzzer beavers into two wins in 1990 against the University of Connecticut and in 1992 against the University of Kentucky . The win against Kentucky was very happy, as Laettner should have been sent off after an early assault against Kentucky player Aminu Timberlake and then converted all of his 10 throws and 10 free throws. The Duke Kentucky game is considered one of the greatest NCAA basketball games of all time. In 1992, Laettner was the only college player to be nominated for the Dream Team , the US Olympic team that won gold at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , alongside superstars such as Michael Jordan , Magic Johnson or Larry Bird .
NBA
During his NBA career he played with the Minnesota Timberwolves (1992-1996), the Atlanta Hawks (1996-1998), the Detroit Pistons (1998-2000), the Dallas Mavericks (2000-2001), the Washington Wizards (2001-2004) and the Miami Heat (2004-2005), where he retired after just one season at the age of 35. At the Mavericks he played briefly with Dirk Nowitzki and at the Washington Wizards a second time at the side of Michael Jordan.
In 1993 Laettner was appointed to the NBA All-Rookie First Team . He played his strongest season in 1996/1997 for the Atlanta Hawks. This season he was also invited to the NBA All-Star Game for the only time . During his NBA career, Laettner averaged 12.8 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists.
Basketball coach
In 2012, he was an assistant coach with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the NBA Development League .
Others
Laettner's father comes from Poland . This was why Laettner wanted to play for Duke, who was coached by Polish-born coach Mike Krzyzewski .
