Angel Martino (born April 25, 1967 in Tuscaloosa , Alabama ) is a former American swimmer and three-time Olympic champion .
At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona she won the gold medal in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay. In the individual competition over 50 m freestyle, she reached 3rd place. Four years later at the Olympic Games in Atlanta she was captain of the US swimming relay and won two more gold medals in the 4 × 100 m freestyle and 4 × 100 m medley. In the 100 m butterfly and 100 m freestyle she also won the bronze medal and in the 50 m freestyle she was fourth. Her appointment as captain has been widely criticized because she was banned in 1988 for nandrolone abuse. At the age of 29, she was the oldest US female swimmer to win an Olympic medal.
In addition to her Olympic medals, she won four gold medals at the Pan American Games and seven gold medals at the Goodwill Games . At the 1993 Short Course World Championships in Palma de Mallorca , she became world champion in the 100 m backstroke.
