Starry Lee Wai-king ( Chinese李慧琼, born March 13, 1974 in Hong Kong ) is a Chinese politician of the conservative Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong and has been its party leader since April 2005. Since October 1, 2008, she has been a member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council, where she first represented the geographical constituency of Kowloon West until September 2012 and now represents the functional constituency District Council (Second) . She was also a member of the Hong Kong Executive Council between 2012 and 2016 .

Lee represents the District Council of Kowloon City the constituency To Kwa Wan North .

Career

Lee was born in Hong Kong in 1974 into a working class family and grew up on a public housing project. She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Manchester . She then worked as an accountant for KPMG in Hong Kong.

In 1999, Lee ran for the Kowloon District Council and was elected as the youngest District Councilor at the time. In 2004 she was recruited by Jasper Tsang to join the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong . In 2008 she was elected to the Legislative Council, to which she has been a member since then. In 2012, the then Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Leung Chun-ying, appointed her to the Hong Kong Executive Board .

In 2015, Lee was named party leader of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong. A year later she was traded for the future as the possible Chief Executive of Hong Kong. Lee called for an end to the violence during the ongoing protests in Hong Kong in 2019 .

Hong Kong local elections 2019

After the devastating defeat of her party and for the entire pro-Beijing camp in the 2019 local elections in Hong Kong , for which she took responsibility and apologized, Lee immediately offered to resign as party leader. This offer was rejected by her party one day after the elections.

Lee was only just able to defend her own seat on the Kowloon City District Council with 1,881 votes to 1,538 votes, which fell to her pro-democracy challenger Leung Kwok-hung (also known by his nickname Long Hair ).
