The BBS-ME (vocational school metal technology • electrical engineering of the Hanover region) Otto-Brenner-School is part of the vocational school center or BBS campus at Waterlooplatz in Hanover . It was given the suffix Otto Brenner School in 1992 in memory of the former chairman of IG Metall Otto Brenner .

With 69 courses, the school is one of the largest commercial technical vocational schools in Lower Saxony (as of November 15, 2018). The size of the school is the result of the merger of the three individual vocational schools BBS4 (specializing in electrical engineering), BBS5 (specializing in metal technology), BBS6 (career entry school) and BBS22 (technical school for mechanical and electrical engineering).

history

  • 1952: The school committee, headed by Otto Brenner, decides on the plans to build the vocational school center on Waterlooplatz.
  • 1953: The new BBS 5 (metal technology) moves into the first new building of the vocational school center.
  • 1961: BBS 4 (electrical engineering) moves into the newly built school building of the vocational school center.
  • 1970: The technical college is introduced.
  • 1996: The technical high school is established at BBS 5.
  • 2001: The technical school (BBS 22) is incorporated into BBS 5.
  • 2002: The Hanover region decides to affiliate BBS 4 with BBS 5.
  • 2003: The school gets its new name BBS-ME, vocational school metal technology ∙ electrical engineering of the Hanover region - Otto-Brenner-School (bbs | me).
  • 2016: The BBS 6 is dissolved and the career entry school is affiliated to the BBS-ME.

Architecture and buildings

The school buildings are shaped by "influences typical of the time from Scandinavian architecture [and count] among the so-called miracles of Hanover". In the course of a general renovation in 2011, the shape of the 1950s architecture was preserved and clear design elements were made visible again. At the same time, attempts were made to make the school technically and energetically sustainable. These measures brought the school a place in the shortlist for the Lower Saxony State Prize for Architecture 2012 in the category: Further construction in the field of tension between energy efficiency and design quality.
