Charles Heirendt

Charles Heirendt (born October 8, 1911 in Rümelingen , Luxembourg ; † May 20, 1995 in Niederkorn , Luxembourg) was a Luxembourg athlete .

Heirendt started for the LAV Schifflingen. In 1933 he won his first four Luxembourg championship titles: cross-country, 5000-meter , 10,000-meter and 4-by-1500-meter relay. He won the last of his 21 championship titles in 1951 over 5000 meters. During the German occupation of Luxembourg in World War II , Heirendt took part in the German championships: in 1942 he finished second behind Otto Eitel in the 10,000 meter run, in 1943 he finished second behind Max Syring over 5000 meters .

After the end of World War II, the European Athletics Championships were held again in Oslo in 1946 . On August 22nd, Heirendt finished sixth over 10,000 meters in 31: 08.2 minutes, a day later he ran over 5000 meters with a new Luxembourg national record in eleventh place; apart from Heirendt, only the Finn Viljo Heino was included in the ranking on both courses. In 1947, Heirendt was the only Luxembourger to win the Košice Marathon .
