Geita is one of the 31 regions in Tanzania . The capital is Geita . The region borders on Lake Victoria in the north, the Mwanza region in the northeast, the Shinyanga region in the southeast, the Tabora region in the south and the Kigoma and Kagera regions in the west .

geography

The region has an area of ​​21,879 square kilometers and around 1.7 million inhabitants (as of 2012). The population density is 87 inhabitants / km². The land lies at an altitude of 1100 to 1300 meters above sea level. Geographically, the area can be divided into four zones:

  • West zone: In the west of the region it rains 700 to 1000 millimeters annually. A third of the farm animals are kept here.
  • Lake zone: At 1,300 meters above sea level, the country is only slightly higher than Lake Victoria. The annual rainfall is between 700 and 1300 millimeters.
  • Eastern zone: The landscape is well suited for agriculture, there is 600 to 1000 millimeters of rain per year.
  • South zone: With rainfall of 750 to 900 millimeters, both arable farming and cattle breeding are practiced here.

The rainfall is well distributed over the year. There are short rain showers from September to December, followed by the two drier months of January and February. Heavy rains fall from March to late May, followed by the dry season from June to early September. The temperatures are between 22 and 30 degrees Celsius. The climate is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification .

Geita was founded in March 2012 from parts of the Shinyanga, Mwanza and Kagera regions as an independent region.

Administrative division

The region consists of five districts, six councils and 125 parishes (wards):

population

The population in the region largely belongs to the Bantu ethnic group , mainly the Basukuma and Sumbwa. In 2012, 59 percent of the population were literate. The literacy rate among men over five was 63 percent higher than that of women, where only 55 percent could read and write. At 77 percent, the literacy rate in the city was significantly higher than the average.

Facilities and services

  • Education: In 2012 there were 567 primary schools in the region, eleven of which were private schools. Of the over-five-year-olds, 27 percent were currently attending school, 10 percent had dropped out of school and 28 percent had finished school. 35 percent had never attended school. More than half of the population could read and write Swahili, seven percent Swahili and English, over forty percent were illiterate (as of 2012).
  • Health: Four percent of the population were members of a social security system (as of 2012).

Economy and Infrastructure

The most important branch of the economy is agriculture, eighty percent of households deal with it.

Agriculture

The cultivation depends on the geographical location. Cotton and corn are grown all over the country. Other important crops are rice, sweet potato, millet, and peanuts. Almost half of the households own farm animals. Mainly chickens and cattle are kept.

forestry

With 2710 square kilometers, around 14 percent of the district area is forested. The wood is used to produce charcoal, as fuel and for further processing in carpentry and joinery.

Fishing

On Lake Victoria, 8,000 fishermen caught 2,000 tons of fish per year in 2,440 fishing boats (as of 2012).

beekeeping

Beekeeping is particularly common in the Bukombe and Mbogwe districts. A total of 438 tons of honey were produced in 240,000 beehives (as of 2012).

Mining

Geita is one of the gold-richest regions of Tanzania. Gold has been found here in open-cast mining since 1932 . The mine is operated by Anglogold Ashanti and in 2018 4,500 employees mined 564,000 ounces of gold.

traffic

The national road T4 crosses the region from Kahama to Rwanda in the north of the region. The T3 national road runs parallel to the south.

Attractions

  • Rubondo National Park : Located on Rubondo Island and other small islands on Lake Victoria, this 456 square kilometer national park is known for its waterfowl. But also the rare Sitatunga as well as elephants, giraffes, hippos, bushbucks, pythons and crocodiles are at home here.
