The Rubondo National Park , also Rubondo Island National Park , is a national park in northwestern Tanzania . It is located on the island of Rubondo in the southwest of Lake Victoria and covers 457 km². The Frankfurt Zoological Society supported the park from 1966 to 2011.

vegetation

90% of the park is covered by wet forest, the remaining area is made up of open grasslands, papyrus swamps and sandy beaches. Tamarind trees , palm trees , jasmine and 40 species of orchid grow in the forests .

Wildlife

Native mammals include sitatungas , hippos , vervet monkeys , genets, and mongooses . Because of the very good monitoring and protection options, several endangered species have been introduced to the Rubondo National Park, including African gray parrots , chimpanzees , black and white colobus monkeys , giraffes and a small population of elephants . Bushbucks , otters , crocodiles and ospreys also live in the park . On the marshy shores, dwarf hooded fishermen , paradise flycatchers , herons , storks and spoonbills breed . Thousands of Eurasian migratory birds come every year . There are fish such as Haplochromis species and Nile perch .
