history

The history of Geita is strongly influenced by gold mining. Already in the first years of the German colonial era, in the late 1880s, mining rights were granted; in 1910 there were already 111. After the First World War, during the British colonial era, the gold price had fallen and the British were more interested in agriculture. Gold prospecting was banned during World War II. Geita Gold Mine started mining in 1936 and with 2000 employees became the largest gold mine in East Africa. Four years after independence, the mine was closed in 1966 due to political upheaval and falling gold prices. When gold prices rose again, the mine reopened in 1971. Individuals have already started mining gold since 1960, this was legalized in 1984 and a total of 300 licenses were issued. In 1996 the Ashanti Gold company from Ghana acquired the most important mining rights, but it was only after the partnership with AngloGold from South Africa in 2000 that the necessary investments of 400 million US dollars could be raised, so that mining began in 2002.
