Central Bank of Eswatini
The Central Bank of Eswatini or Central Bank of Eswatini , Siswati : Umntsholi Wemaswati , is the central bank of the Kingdom of Eswatini . Until 2018, it operated under the name Central Bank of Swaziland . It is located in the capital Mbabane in the Hhohho region .
The bank and with it its own monetary policy was founded in 1974 by King Sobhuza II . In 1974, on Independence Day, the new currency and legal tender Lilangeni was issued. Initially, the premises of a Swaziland bank were rented, and in 1979 the Umntsholi Wemaswati central bank opened its own building with a vault and gold and foreign exchange reserves.
The central bank issues fixed-income securities (bonds) with maturities of 3, 5, 7 and 10 years. In addition, short-term debt securities (Treasury Bills) with terms between 91 days and one year are auctioned weekly.
The central bank of Eswatini is part of the Common Monetary Area , which includes South Africa , Namibia , Lesotho and Eswatini. Although these politically independent states issue their own currency, all four currencies are controlled by the South African Reserve Bank and the exchange rate is fixed at 1: 1 to the South African rand . In addition to the local currencies, the South African rand is legal tender in all four countries.
