A medical supply store is a service company in the health industry that mainly offers the supply of medical aids and consumables.

Range of offers

Medical supply stores are specialized in different degrees. Many therefore only cover part of the possible product range.

The core of the offer are usually the product groups listed in the list of medical aids provided by the statutory health insurance (except hearing aids and visual aids, which are mainly covered by hearing aid acousticians or opticians). These include bandages , orthoses , prostheses , wheelchairs , care beds , walking aids , compression stockings , toilet chairs and orthopedic insoles .

Many medical supply stores have their own workshops in which, for example, prosthetic legs and insoles can be manufactured or finished products such as wheelchairs can be repaired.

The range is often supplemented with wellness items, health shoes, corsetry and similar items that cannot usually be billed to health insurers.

Cooperation with health insurance companies

Approval by statutory health insurance companies

Most medical supply stores bill the majority of their services with the statutory health insurance companies. To do this, they need a prequalification and an institution ID .

Until the end of 2010 there were medical supply stores of classes 1, 2 and 3 in accordance with Section 126 of the Social Code Book V.

  • Class 1: Delivery of individually crafted aids, in which the manual work represents the predominant part of the aid, and industrially manufactured aids.
  • Class 2: Delivery of all other aids without additional manual preparation.
  • Class 3: Dispensing of devices for self-treatment of patients.

Class 1 had to be led by a master ( orthopedic technician , orthopedic mechanic or bandagist ). A class 2 medical supply store could also be run by a qualified employee from the health sector who had worked in the area for at least five years. Certification according to ISO 9001 or ISO 13485 was necessary in order to obtain a cash register approval .

Since 1 January 2011, this regulation was 126 section on the basis of §. 1a SGB V through a prequalification replaced. The medical supply retailer can apply for prequalification from an independent prequalification body for each product group that it wishes to cover and provide evidence of its suitability. A prequalification is the prerequisite for the conclusion of contracts with the statutory health insurance companies, on the basis of which billing can then be carried out. It is granted for five years and then has to be repeated.

Billing

In addition to a concluded contract, a prescription is required for billing . This is usually issued by a doctor and contains personal data of the patient and the diagnosis and the description of the required aid.
