The Rasenfunk is a German-language podcast founded in August 2014 in which journalists, fans, bloggers and podcasters talk about football . The broadcasts of the lawn radio are moderated by the sports journalist Max-Jacob Ost. Frank Helmschrott is responsible for the technology behind the podcast; he can only be heard in a few episodes. The lawn radio is ad-free, it is financed exclusively through the support of the listeners.
Concept and broadcast formats
The podcast consists of discussions by the sports journalist Max-Jacob Ost with changing guests. In an attempt to distance oneself from common soccer rounds like the one- two or Sky90, boulevard-esque and populist topics are largely left out of the grass radio. Ost described the motivation for lawn radio to the Allgemeine Zeitung from Mainz as follows: "What TV and radio offer for football was too superficial for us, the conversation too succinct. So we go in-depth, don't use any phrases, and apparently we have them Not only we miss formats. " All broadcast formats are characterized by a factual discussion that is often very tactical . Nevertheless, the East is not afraid to take a stand on socio-political issues in football. It is also the declared aim of the lawn radio to properly analyze the smaller clubs in the Bundesliga and thus counteract the imbalance in current sports reporting in favor of clubs such as Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund .
Final conference
In the “lawn radio final conference” started in August 2014, East looks back with two guests on current games, usually those of the last match day of the 1st Bundesliga. The name is, according to Ost, a tribute to the final conference in the Bundesliga broadcast of the public radio . The lawn radio final conference appears almost weekly and lasts between two and three hours. For each episode, the focus is usually on a Bundesliga club, to which guests with in-depth background knowledge are invited. Each Bundesliga club is discussed in detail at least once per season. During the current Bundesliga season, the final conference usually appears on Sunday night or Monday afternoon.
Important games of the German men's national soccer team at international soccer tournaments are also often discussed in the final conference. So there have been one or more episodes to the European Championship in 2016 , the 2016 Olympic Games , the European U21 Championship in 2017 , the Confederations Cup in 2017 and the 2018 World Cup . After the summer 2019, the Games of were German national football team of the women in the soccer World Cup Women 2019 discussed.
Final conference - season preview
At the end of the summer break, a season preview appears in the East with two guests analyzing each club in the Bundesliga. Topics are the transfers made, test matches played and the course of the preparation for the season. At the end of the episode, Ost, his guests and the users of the lawn radio website each give their tips for the final table of the Bundesliga season.
Final conference - Lawn radio Royal
During the winter and summer break of the 1st Bundesliga, the multi-part "Rasenfunk Royal" is published, in which all eighteen clubs in the 1st Bundesliga are discussed in detail with eighteen guests on the previous half-series or season. Since the third lawn radio Royal, Collina's heirs have been looking back on the performance of the referees . The Royal Lawn Radio lasts between 18 and 21 hours. With the "Rasenfunk Royal XS" there were also several issues for the 2nd Bundesliga .
Grandstand talk
In January 2015 the first “Grandstand Talk” appeared. This broadcast format is devoted in detail to a timeless topic from the world of football. The episodes are monothematic and last several hours. So far, broadcasts on the history of football tactics, doping in football and specifically doping at the 2018 World Cup or TV rights in football have appeared in the grandstand discussion . The football leaks have also been a topic in the stands several times.
Short pass
The “short pass” is the shortest format of lawn radio with a duration of 30 to 45 minutes. It started in May 2016 and is dedicated to current football issues. The developments of other European top leagues are discussed as well as international soccer tournaments.
Crowdfunding
The lawn radio began as a leisure project. With the gradual expansion of lawn radio to three broadcast formats and longer episodes, the increased time, costs and work required for Ost and Helmschrott could no longer be permanently implemented as part of a leisure project. On July 9, 2016, they therefore founded the “Rasenfunk Supporters Club”. Since then, listeners have been able to support the lawn radio financially via Patreon and bank transfer. In this way, lawn radio should continue to be free of charge, free of advertising and independent of major sponsors. Lawn radio has been cooperating with spox.com and the Weser-Kurier since the start of the 2017/18 Bundesliga season . Both media embed lawn radio broadcasts on their websites. The lawn radio does not receive any money for this, but more range.
As part of a lecture at "Das Sendezentrum", Ost implemented the lawn radio 2017 financing strategy. While lawn radio received around 800–1000 euros in donations per month in mid-2017, at the beginning of 2018 it was already 1500–2000 euros per month. In order to be able to make a living in the east with the production of lawn radio, lawn radio would need around 5000 euros in donations per month. With the start of the 2018/19 Bundesliga season, East will be operating lawn radio full-time.
Reception and awards
The German Academy for Football Culture drew the lawn radio on 26 October 2018 with the Fanpreis for "special commitment by fans for fans" as the best football podcast of the year. The lawn radio prevailed among 45 applicants. In addition to the winning figure MAX, there was prize money of 5000 euros for the lawn radio. The lawn radio had applied with an episode of the grandstand talk about RasenBallsport Leipzig .
Jérôme Grad from the German Academy for Football Culture justified the selection of the jury as follows: “The variety that is offered to the listeners on the 'lawn radio' with its three formats speaks in favor of the winner. Anyone who is interested in the Bundesliga, the top international leagues and social issues related to football can completely cover this broad spectrum with 'lawn radio'. "
Stefanie Fiebrig, the creator of the soccer blog and podcast “Textilverkommen”, was a member of the jury herself and gave the laudatory speech. She praised the lawn radio for its broad range of topics, for example with programs on blind football or e-sports. She particularly liked the integration of women's football expertise: “Max-Jacob Ost is incredibly good at dealing with women, something that I miss almost everywhere else in sports journalism. In the 'lawn radio', for example, it was not at all an issue that the World Cup expert in Russia was a woman. ”In the laudatory speech, Fiebrig said: Although it was about men's football, women on lawn radio had a voice and were serious and serious interlocutors.
As of autumn 2018, lawn radio has 20,000 subscribers and is downloaded an average of 25,000 times per broadcast.
Football podcast list
The makers of the lawn radio maintain an extensive list of football podcasts, the so-called podroll. This includes both league and club-specific podcasts from Germany and abroad. At the start of this list there was a grandstand discussion on June 24, 2015 with the title "Football Podcasts" and an update on October 16, 2018 with the title "News from the world of football podcasts".
