Meikel Schönweitz (born February 5, 1980 in Groß-Gerau ) is a German football coach . He has been the head coach of the DFB's U national teams since January 1, 2019 .

Life

After graduating from high school and completing basic military service, Schönweitz began studying sports at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, which he completed in 2008 as a graduate sports scientist with a focus on economics and management.

Career as a player

Schönweitz began playing football at the age of three at SV 07 Geinsheim. He went through all selection stages up to the Hessen selection and took part in several German championships. He remained loyal to his hometown club throughout his youth. Only in the first senior years Schönweitz played one season each at 1. FC Eschborn and FC Eddersheim . In 2008 Schönweitz ended his active career at the age of 28 after five promotions in ten senior years.

Career as a trainer

At the age of 13, Schönweitz took over as coach of the SV 07 Geinsheim youth team. From 1993 to 2008 he looked after youth teams of all ages for fifteen years and was involved in the youth work of the club.

In 2002 he started as a DFB base trainer in the Groß-Gerau region, and in 2007 he worked as a regional selection trainer for the Darmstadt region. In 2008 he went to the Hessian Football Association as an association sports teacher and was responsible for selecting Hessen and training for coaches for two years. He then went to 1. FSV Mainz 05 and trained its U17s for four years, which he led to the 2014 season championship of the Bundesliga South / Southwest. At the same time, Schönweitz was responsible for the association as school coordinator for the elite football schools in Mainz and Wiesbaden. During his time in Mainz, he qualified as a football teacher in 2012 (final grade 1.3).

In 2014 Schönweitz accepted an offer from Hansi Flick and moved to the DFB as a U16 coach. There he initially also took over the coordination of the U15 to U17 juniors. In the following year Schönweitz reached 3rd place with the U17 national team at the European Championships in Azerbaijan. In the following years he took over the next higher class. His area of ​​responsibility as coordinator also expanded continuously, so that in 2018 he was responsible for the U15 to U20 national teams as a U20 coach and sporting director.

When Horst Hrubesch resigned as DFB sports director at the end of 2018, Schönweitz was transferred to his newly created position as head coach of the U national teams on January 1, 2019 . There he is responsible for all junior national teams of the DFB, for their sporting issues and coaching development.
