Perian is a free component for Apple's QuickTime Framework for displaying common video formats, which enables QuickTime-based programs to play back numerous other codecs such as DivX, Xvid or AC3 Audio, and can therefore be viewed as analogous to ffdshow . The libavcodec library of the popular FFmpeg project is used for decoding .

The development of the software was stopped in May 2012. Under OS X Mavericks it only works when using the "Quicktime 7 Player", which Apple once made available for free download for OS X Snow Leopard and which also runs under the current system.

Perian supports the container formats AVI , Flash Video , Matroska , DivX Media Format and VP6 as well as a variety of video codecs:
