3ivx (pronounced "Thriv-ex") is an MPEG-4 - video codec from 3ivx Technologies for generating MPEG-4-compatible files. The codec was initially available for free, but from version 5 it is sold commercially.

overview

3ivx is primarily designed for use in embedded systems with low computing power. 3ivx provides plug-ins and filters for Microsoft * .asf and * .avi , as well as for Apple QuickTime . It also allows the creation of * .mp4 files and provides an audio codec for the creation of AAC files.

Official encoders and decoders are available for Windows , macOS and BeOS , older versions are also available for Amiga and Linux . Furthermore, FFmpeg can decode 3ivx.

Another feature of 3ivx is its support for streaming media , which is not possible with the avi file format. This makes 3ivx suitable for preparing videos for the Internet.

Encoder

When installing the 3ivx package, an encoder is also installed, which enables files to be easily converted into the 3ivx standard.

In contrast to other MPEG-4-like encoders, 3ivx can generate real MPEG-4 video that conforms to the official MPEG-4 specifications, so you don't need your own plug-in to play it back. The resulting file can be played by any player compatible with the MPEG-4 standard; no special decoder is required.
