Neuvy-au-Houlme is a French municipality with 208 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Orne in the region of Normandy .

geography

The municipality is located 15 kilometers northwest of the city of Argentan and immediately south of the border with the Calvados department , which it borders in the north. Neuvy is away from main roads, but is connected to the D 909 to Falaise and Putanges-Pont-Écrepin via the neighboring town of Bazoches-au-Houlme . The municipality is traversed by the Baize , the Bilaine that flows into it and the Ruisseau de la Fontaine André stream.

Culture and history

Already in Roman times there was a place at the site of today's Neuvy, which is documented by numerous finds. However, this place was destroyed in 396 AD by the Saxons , who built a new settlement on the same site. In the Middle Ages the place was home to a monastery. In addition, the village church, which still exists today, was built in the 13th century. In general, religion played a special role at this time, as evidenced by some street names. Accordingly, Neuvy was also the scene of the Huguenot Wars when it was a base for the Viscounts of Falaise. At that time there was a fortress in the place, which was near the present church. In 1839 the formerly independent town of Fresnay-le-Buffard was incorporated into Neuvy-au-Houlme. This included, among other things, an important stud that was converted into a military hospital during the occupation that began in 1940 by the German Wehrmacht . A stud in the district of Le Gazon was used as a prison camp until the liberation of the community on August 20, 1944. In the post-war period, too, agriculture retained an essential role in local production. At the same time, the stud in Fresnay continued to operate professionally and was awarded the title “best rearing in France” in 2004.

Place names

The origin of the name Neuvy is not entirely clear. One hypothesis says that the word derives from the Gallo-Roman root Novius . Another theory names the words Novus vicus ( Latin for "new settlement") as the starting point for the development of the name. The word Houlme , which is used to distinguish it from other places with the name Neuvy, could also be of Latin origin and derive from the word ulmus (Latin for elm ). Another theory is that it originated from the Scandinavian word holm , which describes the region's wooded hill country. The name of the district Fresnay is derived from the Latin word fraxinus , which means " ash ". The addition of the name Buffard goes back to the Buffart family, who owned important lands in the village.
