Fresnay-le-Buffard is a former French commune in the department of Orne . Today it is part of the Neuvy-au-Houlme municipality .

history

During the French Revolution , the place under the name Fresnay le Buffard became a separate municipality. The suffix Buffard is derived from the name of the Buffart family, the former ruling family of the place, and serves to distinguish it from other communities called Fresnay. The municipality, which in 1793 had a population of 157 inhabitants, belonged to the canton of Bazoches and the Orne department. Through the reorganization of the cantons, it was assigned to the canton Putanges in 1801 . In addition, two hyphens were added to the name and the alternative spelling Fresnaye-le-Buffard was allowed. Although the population had grown to 236 by 1836, the municipality gave up its independence in 1839 and was incorporated into the neighboring municipality of Neuvy-au-Houlme. Fresnay is the location of an important stud farm that was named “best rearing in France” in 2004.
