Culture and history
In the Middle Ages, Bazoches was an important place as the seat of an archdeaconate within the diocese of Sées . The archdeaconate comprised 120 parishes, with the existence of the parish of Bazoches being documented since the 11th century. In addition to a church there was a castle in the village, both of which were destroyed by Gottfried V in 1113 . The church was only rebuilt after a long time. In 1477 the Baron von Bazoches had a watchtower built near the former castle, the remains of which are still preserved today. A new church was built in 1509. After the French Revolution , Bazoches was initially the capital of its own canton , but was already incorporated into the Putanges canton in 1801. In 1812 the formerly independent community of La Chapelle-Monvoisin was incorporated into Bazoches. The center of the village was formed by a chapel that is still preserved today. In the same year Saint-Pavin also became part of the municipality. In Saint-Pavin is the Château de Saint-Pavin , which became famous as the birthplace of the writer Rémy de Gourmont, who was born in 1858 .
Place name
Until the 12th century the place was called Basollae , which is derived from the Latin word basilica and probably stood for a chapel or a small fortress. The current part of the name Bazoches developed from this name . The word Houlme could also be of Latin origin and derive from the word ulmus (Latin for elm ). Another theory is that it originated from the Scandinavian word holm , which describes the wooded hill country around Bazoches.
