Church Saint-Pierre in Giel

Giel-Courteilles is a French municipality with 430 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Orne in the region of Normandy .

geography

The municipality is located 13 kilometers northwest of the city of Argentan in the north of the Orne department. The area is traversed by the Orne River and the Le Gue Blandin and La Fontaine André streams ; In addition, there is another stream, the Ruisseau du Val Renard , which divides the municipality into the formerly independent districts of Giel and Courteilles .

Culture

In the district of Giel there is the Château du Jardin, a castle that was probably built in the 14th century as a noble residence; since then, among other things, the east facade has been renewed in the early 16th century and extensive restoration carried out by a later owner. An orphanage that opened in 1868 and was financed by the mayor at the time belongs to the same place and offered space for 17 boys; later it was enlarged and moved to a former farm where it is still today.

The village of Courteilles was dependent on the Lords of Briouze in the Middle Ages and has a castle called the Château de Crêvecoeur . It originated in the 16th century and was devastated in 1800 shortly after the French Revolution ; then it went into private ownership.

Agriculture continues to play an important role in the local economy, alongside which horse breeding has established itself. There are two stud farms in the municipality, one of which is owned by the internationally successful rider Albert Cayron.

Development as a community

In the course of the French Revolution in 1793 both Giel with 275 and Courteilles with 367 residents emerged as independent communities. While the population in Giel remained more or less constant, the neighboring town of Courteilles suffered a severe loss, so that the population had halved by the middle of the 20th century. When the two municipalities were merged on February 19, 1965 and were given the double name that still exists today, Giel was the larger of the two places. In the decades after it was founded, there was initially a sharp decline in population and then a sharp increase, which culminated at the turn of the millennium.
