Les Rotours is a commune Déléguée in the French community Putanges-le-Lac with 117 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Orne in the region of Normandy .
geography
The Commune déléguée is located on the Orne , 24 kilometers northeast of Flers . In addition to the actual place, there is the hamlet of Les Chenevières on the lake shore of the Lac de Rabodanges , which dams the Orne.
history
On the right side of the Rabodanges reservoir, near the Pont de Sainte-Croix (crossing of the lake), there is a granite cross. At the foot of the cross is the name of Jacques Turgot , an adviser to the king who died in 1659. The cross used to stand in the middle of the old Roman bridge over the Orne (the reservoir was only created in 1960), which was destroyed by German troops on August 17, 1944. It represented the border between the communes of Les Rotours, Rabodanges and Sainte-Croix-sur-Orne . At this point there used to be another small village with around 80 inhabitants that was abandoned when the reservoir was built. There were several mills there before the lake was formed. In the French overseas department of Guadeloupe there is a canal called Canal des Rotours , named after Jean-Julien Angot des Rotours , who was appointed governor of the island in 1826 . The ten kilometer long canal that connects Morne-à-l'Eau with Pointe-à-Pitre was created in 1829.
The name is derived from the old French word Routoir . This refers to a kind of pond where you could roast hemp .
With effect from January 1, 2016, the previous municipalities of Chênedouit , La Forêt-Auvray , La Fresnaye-au-Sauvage , Ménil-Jean , Putanges-Pont-Écrepin , Rabodanges , Les Rotours , Saint-Aubert-sur-Orne and Sainte- Croix-sur-Orne amalgamated to a Commune nouvelle with the name Putanges-le-Lac and have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Putanges-Pont-Écrepin. The municipality of Les Rotours belonged to the Arrondissement of Argentan and the canton of Athis-de-l'Orne .

Sports
The regional (Lower Normandy) championships in water skiing are held annually on the Rabodanges reservoir . You can also fish there.
