Ménil-Jean is a commune Déléguée in the French community Putanges-le-Lac , with 119 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Orne in the region of Normandy .

geography

The place Ménil-Jean is located 16 kilometers southwest of the city of Argentan on the left bank of the Orne River and a few kilometers downstream from Écouché . On the border with the neighboring municipality of Giel-Courteilles, there is a bridge over the river, the Pont de la Villette . The D781 road, which runs through the village center, connects to the main traffic axis between Putanges-Pont-Écrepin and La Ferté-Macé near the neighboring town of La Fresnaye-au-Sauvage . The former municipality covered an area of 7.04 km² and is traversed by the stream le Gue Blandin next to the Orne .

In the course of the French Revolution , the municipality was first assigned to the canton of Écouché in 1790 . Due to the location between the places Écouché and Putanges, the question of affiliation was re-asked and in 1881 the population demanded the assignment to the canton of Putanges, which was achieved on December 22, 1888 against the resistance of the administration.

History and culture

In the 15th century, today's Ménil-Jean was ruled by two different feudal lords . While the first fiefdom encompassed the village, the second consisted of a feudal mansion, in the place of which a castle was later built. This had a chapel, but it was destroyed. According to a legend, there was a fortress near Ménil-Jean in the Middle Ages, but this has not been scientifically proven.

The old church of the place was built in the 12th century and underwent major changes in the 15th and 16th centuries. It is located around half a kilometer south of the Pont de la Villette in a wooded area above the Orne bank. When the western part of the former 23-meter-long prayer house was removed around 1851, it was degraded to a chapel and as such was given the name Notre-Dame de Pitié . The new dimensions resulted in a length of eight meters compared to a width of 8.7 meters. The structural form still largely corresponds to the Romanesque style. The building has a bell tower and also included a cemetery on the outside, but no graves have survived. Inside there is a single age, adorned with a figure of the Mother of God with child and two other saints. Originally there were also representations of two other saints, but all three objects were stolen in 1979 and only the one of the Blessed Mother was found again.

In addition to the main church in the forest at that time, there was a second religious building in the community in the 17th century, today's local church. Its age is unclear, even if it was described in 1693 by the pastor at the time as "almost as old" as the church in the forest. Thanks to its location in the center of the village, it was named la Chapelle (the chapel) based on it. It was called Saint-Eutrope and was replaced by today's village church of Saint Jean-Baptiste in 1856 , although nothing of the old building was preserved. Only a statue of the name giver of the old chapel remained in the new building made of granite stone. The saint also remained the patron saint of the village festival until 1939.

During the course of the Second World War , the municipality became the scene when German soldiers set up a slaughterhouse in Ménil-Jean during the liberation of France by the Allies in the summer of 1944 to ensure the supply of their own troops. Two civilians were killed by a German tank. On the night of August 18, 1944, the Germans blew up the Pont de la Villette bridge, which was later rebuilt; in addition, some houses were destroyed by fire bombs.

With effect from January 1, 2016, the previous municipalities of Chênedouit , La Forêt-Auvray , La Fresnaye-au-Sauvage , Ménil-Jean , Putanges-Pont-Écrepin , Rabodanges , Les Rotours , Saint-Aubert-sur-Orne and Sainte- Croix-sur-Orne amalgamated to a Commune nouvelle with the name Putanges-le-Lac and have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Putanges-Pont-Écrepin. The municipality belonged to the Arrondissement of Argentan and the canton of Athis-de-l'Orne .

In 1793 the parish had a population of 300 and held that level for much of the 19th century until a slump occurred at the end of the century. In 1901, 188 residents were recorded and the number continued to decrease to the low of 79 in 1990, which was followed by a significant increase in population around the turn of the millennium.
