Culture and history

Church in the abandoned old town center

Saint-Aubert-sur-Orne was founded by the monks of Mont-Saint-Michel , who built a church there around the year 800. They named it Saint Aubert and began clearing the forests. For a long time the village was dependent on the Abbey of Saint-Étienne in Caen . The farmers sent their pigs into the forest to grow acorns and the like. to eat. From this arose the custom that the pigs were presented annually to a representative of the ruling abbey. During the Huguenot Wars , the church was destroyed and rebuilt. A poor nobleman from Saint-Aubert produced counterfeit money, was caught, fled to the Roche d'Oëtre and was killed there.

Before the French Revolution , the village was important: there was a pastor and two vicars . There was also a prison and a notary next to the church. A land survey recorded 1596 area divisions. The existence of a wage mill is documented, another mill was used to process grain. In the past century the village shifted, a new church was built and the old church was abandoned. To this day, Saint-Aubert-sur-Orne has lost much of its former importance.
