La Forêt-Auvray is a commune Déléguée in the French community Putanges-le-Lac with 173 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Orne in the region of Normandy .

geography

The Commune déléguée is 19 kilometers northeast of the city of Flers . The core town lies in the hill country above the river Orne . The river running north of the village center represents the border to the neighboring Ménil-Hermei and also forms the border to the neighboring Calvados department for a short section . In addition to the Orne, the Guesnerie and Ruisseau des Vallées streams flow through the former municipal area. Overall, the Commune déléguée extended over an area of 10.96 km².

The region is characterized by the Bocage landscape and has a relatively strong agricultural sector, with cattle breeding in the foreground. The community includes a stud that has focused on show jumping . The local infrastructure is made up of a network of roads more than 25 kilometers long, which provides connections to the neighboring towns of Bréel , Ménil-Hermei and Saint-Aubert-sur-Orne , but has no connection to the regional transport axes.

History and culture

The Saint-Pierre church

The history of the present-day place began in 1096 when the noble landowner Philippe de Vassy moved to the Holy Land as part of the Crusades and left the rule of his property to his son Enguerrand . He founded a small monastery near the Orne and handed it over to the monks of the Ardenne Abbey near Caen in 1121 . His son Alfred was also called Auvray and thus served as the namesake for the place, which was mentioned in 1197 as Foresta Auveredi . The part of the name La Forêt means "the forest". The Vassy family retained the rule for centuries and had a castle built for themselves in the 16th century. It has survived to this day, although much of its earlier shape was lost due to arson during the French Revolution .

Close to the castle is a flour mill, which was first mentioned in 1125 and whose operation was stopped in 1875. There is also a farm called ferme du ray , where ray comes from the word roi for king and, according to legend, alludes to the presence of King Henry IV in La Forêt-Auvray. The current bridge, which connects over the Orne to the neighboring town of Ménil-Hermei, dates from 1950 and serves as a replacement for a bridge that was opened by the German occupiers on the night of August 17-18, 1944 Retreat was destroyed. Outside the village there is a 2.8 meter high rock known as Pierre levée or Menhir de la Rousselière . A related legend describes it as a dance floor for fairies.

In the center there are two market halls from the 18th century. There had been fairs and other market events in La Forêt-Auvray since 1125. These are evidence of the time before the French Revolution, when La Forêt-Auvray was the capital of a local territory. This also resulted in the existence of a police station, which was closed in 1959. Since 1924 there has been a war memorial erected in memory of the dead of the First World War . Also in the center of the settlement is the Saint-Pierre church , which was badly devastated by a hurricane on December 30, 1705, but was then rebuilt.

With effect from January 1, 2016, the previous municipalities of Chênedouit , La Forêt-Auvray , La Fresnaye-au-Sauvage , Ménil-Jean , Putanges-Pont-Écrepin , Rabodanges , Les Rotours , Saint-Aubert-sur-Orne and Sainte- Croix-sur-Orne amalgamated to a Commune nouvelle with the name Putanges-le-Lac and have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Putanges-Pont-Écrepin. The municipality of La Forêt-Auvray belonged to the Arrondissement of Argentan and the canton of Athis-de-l'Orne .

During the French Revolution the population was 718 in 1793 and then rose sharply to 1261 in 1821. Thereafter, there was a steady decline to around 500 inhabitants at the beginning of the 20th century and around 400 inhabitants at the end of World War II. This trend continued until it hit a temporary low with fewer than 200 people in the 1990s.
