history
The existence of the Vauquelin family in the village has been documented since the 14th century ; In 1475, a member of the family acquired rule of La Fresnaye. As his descendant, Jean Vauquelin de La Fresnaye was born in the village in 1536 and gained great fame as a poet and as a follower of the French king. During Vauqelin's lifetime there was a castle in La Fresnaye that was owned by his family. In the Middle Ages and early modern times, the parish was under the jurisdiction of Briouze .
The name component of the place name Fresnaye goes back to the word frênaie , which stands for an ash forest . In Sauvage is presumably to the family name of a nobleman who owned the place in the past.
