The Piaggio P.8 was a reconnaissance aircraft made by the Italian manufacturer Piaggio .

History and construction

The Piaggio P.8 was developed on the basis of a request from the Regia Marina for a small reconnaissance flying boat that could be carried by the large Italian submarine Ettore Fieramosca . The aircraft had to be designed in such a way that it could be easily assembled or disassembled so that it could be quickly stowed in a watertight cylindrical hangar on board the submarine in order to avoid the danger for the submarine that surfaced during this time to minimize. The P.8 was a braced single-seat high-decker with two floats, which was powered by a Blackburn Cirrus II piston engine with 56 kW. The first flight took place in 1928.

The P.8 was just one of several small seaplanes that were tested for use on board the Ettore Fieramosca. None of the aircraft were ever actually used on board the submarine and the hangar was removed from the submarine in 1931.
