The Piaggio P.23R , which was also called Piaggio P.123 for propaganda purposes , was a fast cargo aircraft made by the Italian manufacturer Piaggio .

History and construction

Piaggio designed the P.23R specifically to set speed records for cargo planes. The aircraft was a three-engine, cantilever low-wing aircraft and had a double tail unit. The three V12 piston engines Isotta Fraschini Asso XI R with 671 kW each were mounted in aerodynamically smooth fairings and each powered a three-blade propeller. The trunk was very slim. The crew sat in two separate open cockpits. Later, the machine having three was Piaggio P.XI-RC.40 - radial engines equipped each with 746 kW and modifies the landing gear. In addition, both cockpits were provided with closed hoods.

The P.23R flew for the first time in 1936. On December 30, 1938, it carried a payload of 5000 kg at an average speed of 404 km / h, setting two new world records, both over the 1000 km and 2000 km -Distance. Development ended in 1939.
