The Piaggio P.23 , also known as the P.23M , was a transport aircraft made by the Italian manufacturer Piaggio .
History and construction
Piaggio designed the P.23 specifically for flights over the North Atlantic, with the intention of developing it into a commercial transport aircraft. The four-engined aircraft was designed as a shoulder-wing wing glider and had a double tail unit. In order to be able to touch down safely in the event of an emergency landing at sea, the hull - although the aircraft was not a flying boat - was constructed like a boat hull. The main landing gear was retractable and designed as a tail wheel landing gear . The plane was with four Isotta-Fraschini-Asso-XI-R. -Equipped with 671 kW motors, each of which was arranged in pairs in a motor pod, one behind the other and thus each driven a pull or a push propeller. The P.23 first flew in 1935. Piaggio stated a top speed of 400 km / h and a maximum range at a cruising speed of 300 km / h with more than 5100 km for the P.23. An Atlantic crossing never took place and its calculated maximum range was never tested. The plane was soon dismantled and never flew again.
