The Piaggio P.6 was a naval reconnaissance aircraft made by the Italian manufacturer Piaggio .

History and construction

The Regia Marina wrote out a two-seater reconnaissance aircraft that could be launched from an airplane catapult and land on the water. To meet this tender, Piaggio produced two models. The first prototype was called P.6bis , was a small biplane with a boat-shaped hull and was driven by a 190 kW V-6 piston engine Isotta Fraschini installed behind the open cockpit between the wings via a pusher propeller.

The second prototype, designated P.6 , was a seaplane with a central main float and two auxiliary floats under the wings. The engine was installed in the bow of the braced double-decker. The wings were almost identical on both models.

Both aircraft had a machine gun for defense, which was movably installed in a bow stand in the P.6bis and in the rear cockpit in the P.6. From 1928 the P.6ter was produced on the basis of the P.6, using a more powerful engine with 306 kW. A total of 15 P.6ter were produced which were used by the Italian Navy on battleships and cruisers.
