Gérard Larcher (born September 14, 1949 in Flers , Orne Department ) is a French politician of the Gaullist party Les Républicains . He is President of the French Senate .

Early career

Gérard Larcher was born the son of the owner of a textile factory. His father owned 20 horses. According to his own admission, Gérard Larcher wanted to become a vet at the age of 13 . After graduating from high school, which he passed at a Lycée in Caen , he studied veterinary medicine in Lyon . After completing his studies, he did his military service with the Garde républicaine in Paris, where he looked after around 500 horses.

From 1974 to 1979 he was a veterinarian for the French national equestrian team . In this capacity he also took part in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal .

Local and regional politics

In 1979 he became a councilor of Rambouillet in the Yvelines department , where he ran a veterinary practice. In 1983 he became mayor of Rambouillet. He held the office continuously until 2004 and again from 2007 to 2014. From 1985 to 1992 he was a member of the Conseil régional der Île-de-France .

Politicians at the national level

In 1986 he became a senator for the Yvelines department ; he retained the mandate until he joined the government in 2004.

From 1995 to 1998 Larcher, who long belonged to the circle around Charles Pasqua , was a member of the Bureau politique of the Gaullist party RPR , then of its Comité politique . From 1999 to 2002 he was the party's national secretary for various policy areas.

From 1997 to 2001 he was Vice President of the Senate and from 2001 to 2004 Chairman of the Chamber's Economic Commission.

During Jacques Chirac's presidency , he was Minister of Labor from 2004 to 2007 under Prime Ministers Jean-Pierre Raffarin and Dominique de Villepin .

Since 2007, Larcher was again a member of the Senate. On October 1, 2008, he became President of the Senate . He lost the office in 2011 to the socialist Jean-Pierre Bel .
