Pierre Jean François Turpin

Pierre Jean François Turpin (born March 11, 1775 in Vire , † May 1, 1840 in Paris ) was a French botanist and painter. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Turpin ".

Live and act

Turpin is one of the most important plant painters of his time. He was stationed in Haiti as a French soldier in 1791, where he met the botanist Pierre Antoine Poiteau , with whom he worked intensively in the following years and whose plant finds he portrayed. However, Turpin also worked with other naturalists, such as Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland . He created around 900 illustration panels for Humboldt's American travel work.

Dedication names

The genus Turpinia Vent was named in his honor . named from the plant family of the pimpernut plants (Staphyleaceae).

Memberships

When La Société Cuvierienne was founded in 1838 , he was one of the 140 founding members of the society. Since December 16, 1833 he was a member of the Académie des Sciences .
