Jean Louis Marie Poiret (born June 11, 1755 in Saint-Quentin , † April 7, 1834 in Paris ) was a French botanist and explorer. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Poir. "

Names after Poiret

In 1807, Étienne Pierre Ventenat named the genus Poiretia, which belongs to the butterfly family, after Jean Louis Marie Poiret. Before that, Antonio José Cavanilles had given a genus from the heather family (Ericaceae) the name Poiretia in 1797 . In 1883 Paul Henri Fischer gave the homonymous name Poiretia P. Fischer to a genus of predatory snails of the family Spiraxidae , so that Poiretia is a hemi-homonym - identical names for a plant and an animal genus.
