Synagogue (La Ferté-sous-Jouarre)
The Synagogue of La Ferte-sous-Jouarre is a synagogue in La Ferte-sous-Jouarre , a town in the Seine-et-Marne of the French region of Ile-de-France . It is located at 28, Boulevard de Turenne.
history
The Jewish community in La Ferté-sous-Jouarre grew significantly due to the immigration of Jews from Alsace after 1871. With financial support from the French state and the community of La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, the new synagogue was built in 1891. It was built according to the plans of the community architect Edmond Fauvet. The synagogue, designed in the Moorish style, was inaugurated on September 21, 1891 by the Grand Rabbi Zadoc Kahn .
The synagogue suffered no major damage during the German occupation in World War II .
architecture
The synagogue with its portal facade is located on Boulevard de Turenne in the vicinity of representative villas from the 19th century. A horseshoe window with an inscribed Star of David is located above the double-sided portal framed by columns . This medium risk has an elaborately designed triple window on the first floor and a twin window on the second floor . The building ends with a cornice under the roof .
The following inscription is written in Hebrew above the triple window on the first floor : This is the gate to the Lord, through it righteous pass ( Psalm 118 : 20).
Todays use
In 1973 the Jewish community sold the synagogue building to the city of La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, as they could no longer finance the maintenance of the building. After the renovation, the Musée André Planson has been on the first floor since 2001 with works by the artist André Planson (1898–1981). The ground floor is used for temporary exhibitions and other cultural events.
