Zadoc Kahn
Zadoc Kahn ( Zadok Khan , Zadok Kahn , born 18th February 1839 in Mommenheim , Alsace ; d. 8. December 1905 in Paris ) was since 1868, succeeding Lazare Isidor Chief Rabbi ( grand rabbin ) of Paris (since 1889) of France ( last recognized by the state before the law on the separation of church and state introduced in 1905 ).
Kahn was one of the leaders of the French Chowewe Zion and the Alliance Israélite Universelle (honorary president), was in contact with the humanitarian works of Baron Hirsch and Baron Edmond de Rothschild , was one of the most important fighters against anti-Semitism . After serving at the wedding of Alfred Dreyfus with Lucie Hadamard in the Paris Great Synagogue in 1890 , he recognized the anti-Semitic component of the Dreyfus affair early on , but was not of great help to Herzl , but defended the reluctance of the wealthy Jews towards the Zionist cause .
Kahn was an officer in the Legion of Honor and the Ordre des Palmes Académiques .
