history
Archaeological finds show that people have lived in the area of today's Moniga since the Bronze Age . A city existed in Roman times at the latest . The Rocca di Manerba was named after a temple built on the rock by the Romans and consecrated to the goddess Minerva . Under the rule of the Republic of Venice , a castle - the Castello di Moniga - was built on the walls of the temple in the 10th century. The current structure of the building goes back to renovations from the 14th or 15th century. The former affiliation to Venice left its mark on the religious administrative structure: although Moniga belongs to the province of Brescia, it is assigned to the diocese of Verona .
Economy and Transport
For a long time most of the inhabitants of Moniga lived exclusively from agriculture , fishing and viticulture . Viticulture is still very important today, Moniga is particularly known for Chiaretto, a dark rosé wine . Today tourism is one of the main sources of income for the municipality.
Moniga is on Strada provinciale 572. The A4 motorway is approx. 12 km away, the nearest train station is in Desenzano, approx. 10 km away .
Attractions
In addition to the Castello di Moniga and the Rocca di Manerba, there are two churches: the parish church of San Martino, built in the 15th century, has been rebuilt several times. The baroque style visible today comes from the last renovation in the 18th century. The small Romanesque church of Madonna della Neve is on the outskirts of town.
