Palazzolo sull'Oglio is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 20,316 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Brescia in Lombardy . The municipality is located halfway, about 20 kilometers southeast of Bergamo and 25 kilometers west-northwest of Brescia . The municipality borders the province of Bergamo . The place is on the edge of the Parco dell'Oglio (north) and in the middle of the lowlands of Brescia.
history
The place is mentioned for the first time in 830 AD with the name Palazzolo . The strategically favorable location on a river ford of the Oglio should have resulted in the establishment of a mansion. A bridge was already proven in Roman times. Here the road led from Brixia (today's Brescia) to Mediolanum (today's Milan ).
At the time of the documentary mention, the remains of a chapel or church, which were uncovered in the 1970s and in the 7th – 9th centuries, also fall. Century to be dated. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the place belonged temporarily to the Republic of Venice , later under the rule of the Habsburg Empire and under Napoleonic rule. Palazzolo sull'Oglio is connected to the railway network via the Bergamo – Brescia railway line with a train station. Another, non-electrified route leads to Lake Iseo to Paratico and is now used as a museum railway .
